The last grand slam event of the year is to start soon. US Open. We have decided to write our predictions in advance, as it’s very unlikely that the situation will change for these couple of days. Generally we believe that this tournament will end up with unpredictable results. As there are no one pronounced favorite for the title at the moment. And do you know why?
Nadal withdrew from the US Open with a wrist injury. It seems like by doing this he has made route of the main favorites much easier. But from the other point of view, even if Rafa participated, he wouldn’t progress deep into the tournament with his rushed preparation and skip of all US Masters. His chances at this event look very ghostly, so we think that the absence of Nadal hasn’t influenced the pre-tournament odds…
Djokovic, Federer, Murray at the US Open
Novak Djokovic is currently ranked world no. 1. What can we expect from him? At this tournament Novak is a pig in a poke. He failed all Masters probably due to his recent wedding and honeymoon. The Serb looked completely disintegrated. Defeat from Robredo… I have nothing to say against Tommy, we deeply respect this player. But Djoker even being in his average form shall have no difficulties facing off the Spaniard, who is a very convenient opponent for the Serb. So this defeat looks very strange. Nevertheless, even at that rate Djoker’s odds have to be taken seriously. First of all, he still has one week for practicing. Not bad. Secondly, top-seeded Serb can afford the luxury of slowly walking into the tournament, taking the opening rounds easy. Thus he can gain his form as the play progresses. It’s very important. The mere fact that the Serb can accelerate in the course of the event means that he can approach all impornant matches armed to the teeth.
Roger Federer. The Swiss odds for the title are miserable this time. Being honest, we still don’t get why Roger tried hard and put all in at two consequent events. Usually the players show their best at one of them, either in Cincinnati or in Toronto, simultaneously losing the other one. This is what Tsonga and Dimitrov did after successful performance in Toronto... We can’t claim it that the two has completely given up in Cincinnati, but they evidently made little efforts. And that’s ok, it works. But at least they have to approach the US Open in fresh form and with great confidence in their tennis. So why did such an aging player as Federer with potentially high odds for success at the US Open work his ass off and minimize his preparation for the US grand slam event? We can’t understand it. But we are more than sure that this stupidity will prevent the Swiss from counting on something serious in New York. 1:6 from Ferrer and 1:4 from Murray are the first signs of the concentration fall and his fatigue. At the Us Open this fatigue will display itself as soon as at the end of the first week or start of the second one.
Andy Murray keeps behaving in a freaky way. The British plays fairly well but he lacks the head and that’s a problem. He was crashed out by Dimitrov at Wimbledon, by Tsonga in Toronto, lose to Federer in Cincinnati. He was claimed favorite in all these matches, but a couple of lost rallies and the British is disintegrated with no hope to pull himself together. Well, there it is. Bringing his coaching partnership with Ivan Lendl to an end seemingly was a huge mistake. But nevertheless, Murray as well as Djokovic is one of the main favorites to the title. In the whole, Andy used to show brilliant play at this series of the US Open. Frankly speaking, we don’t understand it why he is left with no victories by this time. Maybe he lacks confidence and one equal match will help it. He lacks some tine things to burst out. We suppose he is capable of showing big surprises at the upcoming tournament.
Dimitrov and Wawrinka at the US Open 2014
Whom we include in the list of real challengers are Dimitrov and Wawrinka. No one takes them seriously, but we think that for the first time in the long period these guys have real high odds for success. The Bulgarian proved it at Wimbledon that he can play on the level with Djokovic. He has worked on his physical state and now he can easily endure one match of five sets or even two. Gregor is ready for achievements. His tennis has been great for the last half of the year. Considering the facts that Nadal has withdrawn and Djokovic shows something inexplicable, tired Federer and Murray it’s high time for the Bulgarian star to take home the grand slam title.
Wawrinka... This guy has always been hazardous opponent...Yes, his last plays have been very poor. But Stan has never started with awesome results. This fellow drills exclusively for major events. In Cincinnati he was not that bad so we think that in a week we’ll watch another Stan. If he finds the way to make it through 2-3 rounds, he’ll adjust to the courts and to the ball bouncing and will become a big challenge other contenders. So he also possesses all prerequisites for the good play in the US this year.
Then come Milos Raonic, David Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. David kind of gets back in good form. He boasts more than enough playing practice and his tennis is getting better and better. Only compare his matchups in Canada and Cincinnati. We think that in New York he’ll perform even better. And the best of five sets format suits the relentless Spaniard perfectly. Tsonga completed a string of shocks to take home a masters title in Toronto. It was an unbeatable Tsonga of 2008. Shall he be able to maintain such form within two playing weeks in the United States and everything can be. Playing an all-court style Raonic also poses a lot of threat this year. He feels most comfortable on hard courts. As far as the Grand Slam events go, Raonic performed well on Wimbledon which isn’t up to his style. So there is every prerequisite for his deep progress in the upcoming tournament.
And finally dark horses, who are quite numerous this time: Nishikori, Gulbis, Gasquet, Lopes, Cilic, Pospisil. We name the strongest of them, but this list can be continued. What we are driving at is that it’s very likely that we would witness a new winner holding up the US Open tennis trophy. Lately the tournament was won by Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Del Potro. This is a place where compelling things often happen with the courts suitable for any tennis style.

Such evaluation of Gasquet from the bookmakers is understandable. The Frenchman lost his two previous encounters in a row to Monaco and Nadal, which is a sign of a bad form from Richard.
