The players who have pleasantly surprised us
First and foremost we want to pay our tribute to Ilya Marchenko. The Ukrainian has significantly improved his tennis quality and shall he further progress he may even jump into top-32. It would be very interesting to watch him at the Australian Open. Further goes Leonardo Mayer. Usually the player from Argentina comes with his best tennis to the clay portion of the season but this year he displays very solid performance at the very start! Who else? Borna Coric has also made our day. The Croatian youngster has won two close matches, which means that he has upgraded his mentality. Kyle Edmund from Great Britain also looks good but physical stamina is still missing. The 21-year old is capable of playing 3-4 high-level matches before losing his tempo.
The players who have done well
Bernard Tomic looks very profitable. Obviously, the Australian is getting ready for his home Grand Slam event and has huge prospects to make it deep into the major affair. The 16th seed for Melbourne Park, Tomic can potentially get in the list of the last 8 (to do so he’ll have to upset only one top player). Dominic Thiem has also made very strong showing and can astonish us in this season. Benoit Paire had a very inconsistent week. The Frenchmale has shown very decent performance against Lukas Rosol, poor one when playing Thomas Fabbiano and played average tennis taking on Stan Wawrinka. We have to see how the things will progress, but Paire’s potential is undisputable. The titles of the week were claimed by Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic. It’s rather difficult to estimate their current tennis level. The Canadian showed something about 80-90% while the Swiss and Serb haven’t exceeded 70% of their full potential.
The players who brought us disappointment
First of all, it’s Rafael Nadal who mentally lost the season-opening event in Doha to the World No. 1. The Spaniard managed to play only 2 games on a decent level. We guess that this knockout will make Rafa’s Australian Open performance more complicated. Roger Federer also frustrated his fans getting a defeat from Milos Raonic. It may play a bad trick to the Swiss in Melbourne. Kei Nishikori was also not at his best but we bet the Japanese will be in excellent form at the first Grand Slam of the year.

Everything in this match counts in favor of the Spaniard. Nadal, as a real locomotive, took long to get into stride. But having accelerated he becomes unstoppable. Rafa performed well in Madrid
The more I watch the matches with the American players the stronger is my feeling that they all resemble one another. It all looks like a plant cranking out products of the same quality and with the same spoilage. And this trend holds true for the last 4-5 years...
From the moment he appeared on courts, Kei Nishikori has always been one of 5 or 6 super talented promising players. Within the last 3-4 years Kei showed nothing special which reflected on his modest results: he sustained a good tennis level, won several ATP 250 titles, performed well on majors – but...
Such evaluation of Gasquet from the bookmakers is understandable. The Frenchman lost his two previous encounters in a row to Monaco and Nadal, which is a sign of a bad form from Richard.
