The European clay court tournaments are not over yet, but the majority of top players have already turned to prepare for the North American hard courts. And we want to recall the most surprising and disappointing results of the last fortnight.
We’ve already mentioned that Roberto has lately made one of the most rapid progresses in men’s tour. The Spaniard showed brilliant tennis in all his matches and won Stuttgart title by a long shot. Despite some prolonged fights, Bautista stood head and shoulders above his opponents. Roberto comes up with good vision of the play, perfect technique and wonderful tactics training. One has to be much stronger than Agut to take advantage of him, as even in equal matches the Spaniard keeps a cool head and strains every sinew to prevail in key moments. All these skills make Roberto highly dangerous rival. Judging by the fact that he hasn’t registered for the events that are to take place during this fortnight, he does his best to prepare for the US Series. And we expect that he’ll be a pain in the neck to a number of top players.
We heartily congratulate the Argentinian player on his first trophy. In Stuttgart he was stopped by Youzhny to surprise everyone in Hamburg. His tennis is based on the reliable service play which hasn’t let him down in any match in Hamburg. Leonardo also made great use of his backhand and booming forehand shots. This week Leonardo is out of action…Will he manage to adapt to the faster hard courts? The question remains open. His shots techniques are slow, and it’s rather hard to prevail on account of the serve alone. So we advise to bet against Mayer in the opening rounds, especially after the resounding victory. On the other hand, Leo displayed amazingly solid tennis on grass at Wimbledon, so it’s still a question what he’ll show on hard.
This player from Czech Republic who practically eludes every analyzing showed very good tennis at minor European clay events. His powerful serve and accurate shots cause many troubles to his opponents. He progressed to the Stuttgart final and Hamburg semifinal. We expect that the Czech we’ll also be successful at Umag. But will he display something rewarding on the US Series? We don’t think so. His highly attacking tennis on hard he’ll be a good target with positive handicap bets on his rivals. There is no doubt that Rosol we’ll be highly quoted by the bookmakers at the starting rounds of the US Open Series. So we as real fishermen have to arm ourselves with patience and wait. Generally, Rosol is capable of hitting down even an airplane during the first weeks on new surface. We hope that there’ll be no victims…
Very poor tennis David is showing now. He understands that it’s time for him to gain points to get to the year-end finals in London. This is the only reason explaining why we won’t see him playing in Europe the last two weeks. Currently the Spaniard’s play is very obscure with a great number of errors. Evidently, he was in his peak form at Rolland Garros. Will David get back in form before the US Open Series starts? We doubt it. He failed Wimbledon completely... There are some media rumors that David has some healthy issues, but this information hasn’t been proved yet. Nevertheless, David still ranks below his level. So potentially Ferrer will be another target with large positive handicap bets on his opponents. Let’s wait and see.
All the rest
17-year-old Zverev has made my day by his solid play. Will there be continuation? We’ll see. He’s still so young. Cuevas also performed well and made a comfortable win of the Bastard title. But it was rather a matter of luck. Verdasco performed poorly in the final against the dead Souza. The Spaniard was his usual self showing something inexplicable on courts. Two tournaments and two failures. Yes, these tournaments are too much for him. But then what’s the use of applying for them? If I were on his place I would play with some money-bags to earn more. In Newport Karlovic, Groth and the eventual champion Hewitt performed well. The former two even performed shots from the line and showed solid net play. The difference is that Karlovic can do at least something on return, while Groth is nothing of receiver at all. Bernard Tomic won the ATP event in Bogota. He showed really good tennis, but he had to tune in long time ago. The American hard courts would be a challenge for the Australian. Stupid decisions during the whole season have left him with no ranking points. It means that every round he will be facing tops players, which will be troublesome both for him and for his opponents who would prefer to see some easier rivals in the opening rounds.
US Open Series predictions
There is a whole constellation of players who are obliged to show themselves on the US Open Series. Firstly, it’s Andy Murray. He needs points to get to London. Then goes the abovementioned David Ferrer. He is followed by the trio of young Nishikori, Dimitrov and Raonic. Particularly, the last one. He has to defend his Toronto final. And it would be very tough. Berdych is another player who has to do his best. As far as the elite four is concerned, they’ll play Toronto and Cincinnati Masters traditionally by halves and will actively train for the US Open. Also don’t forget about Cilic. We don’t understand what he plays Umag for. He has nothing to do here but to fight for big cash and the opportunity to show himself before his counterparts. So it’s worth considering betting against him. As he will be shorten of time to move to the North American continent. His present tennis is ranked top 10-15 level. And of course, Isner. Conventionally, the American fellow performs well on Masters. So this is our view of the powers balance for the following month.
And we start working at full power.

From the moment he appeared on courts, Kei Nishikori has always been one of 5 or 6 super talented promising players. Such evaluation of Gasquet from the bookmakers is understandable. The Frenchman lost his two previous encounters in a row to Monaco and Nadal, which is a sign of a bad form from Richard.
