Betting on USA tennis. What problems american players face today

The more I watch the matches with the American players the stronger is my feeling that they all resemble one another. It all looks like a plant cranking out products of the same quality and with the same spoilage. And this trend holds true for the last 4-5 years. Americans should definitely reconsider their existing approach to the training of young sportsmen, otherwise, in the nearest future they will not be able to breed up any competitive tennis player as the current system and philosophy of coaching do not correspond to the modern requirements.

Probably, the last worthwhile product of the American tennis is Mardy Fish. I don’t take John Isner into account, as he is more a unique player with a booming serve providing him with an opportunity to gain excellent results and compensating for his drawbacks, which are quite numerous, by the way. Mardy Fish, on the contrary, is a really well-balanced athlete with no evident weak sides. And his results prove it.

Jack Sock
Today’s generation of the American players is a series of clones with the same level of tennis and with the same weak sides. Jack Sock, Bradley Klahn, Rhyne Williams, Steve Johnson use the same tactics, tennis philosophy and technical equipment. Their tactics is simple: strong and reliable serve and a powerful forehand. That’s it.

But serve-and-forehand game is not enough to succeed in tennis today. The times of Pete Sampras are gone. It’s more natural for today’s racquets to increase their control over the ball, and by that improving the overall tennis level of the balanced defending players. The philosophy of tennis is changing.

John Isner serveAll of the above mentioned players have one significant disadvantage – a very poor backhand. It’s very tough to get even in the top 40 with such backhand strokes. Moreover, this disadvantage becomes very visible during the game. The yesterday’s match between Johnson and Bautista revealed the superiority of the new school over the old one. Steve Johnson could do nothing to beat the Spanish player in long rallies. Due to the unreliable and weak backhand, Johnson had to give it up to Bautista when backhands exchange and so the Spaniard could dictate his rules. When Steve tried his best using a powerful forehand he became more vulnerable to the counterattacks of Bautista, as by hitting the runaround forehand the American player opened a wide corridor for Bautista to hit along the lines and the Spaniard didn’t miss such opportunities.Roberto Bautista Agut
As a result, the only thing Johnson could set against the Spaniard is to play 2-3 hits rallies relying on his forehand. But, frankly speaking, this tactics is far from being perfect. The unreasonable risk always gives way to the enormous number of unforced errors. Consequently, the American had few answers to the questions posed by his aggressive opponent. Why so? He hit very poor backhand shots. And backhand is an essential element in today’s tennis. Maybe I missed something, but, in my view, the problem is so evident! And it’s difficult for me to explain how it possible not to give adequate training to such talented players? Of course, backhand is considered to be a difficult shot from a technical point of view, as well as forehand or volley. So such a failure astonishes me greatly.

By the way, the problems with backhand have deep roots in America. The legends of the latest past, Roddick and Blake, are also known to have troubles with backhand and the two failed to play to the at least 80% of their potential. What is different about this all is that the average level of tennis has greatly increased since then.

Today the courts are dominated by the balanced players with no weak sides who acquired first-class training and possess perfect techniques. In our times it’s not enough to have a good serve and a powerful forehand stroke. Any successful player needs to master all of the fundamental tennis elements.

Rayn Harrison

Kyle Edmund, Bautista Agut, Dominic Thiem, Thompson – all these tennis freshmen represent completely different formation and philosophy and thus may count on good future in tennis. But I see no American males among rising stars in tennis…
And actually in my opinion only due to the enormous number of ATP tournaments, either major or minor, where Americans grant wild cards we see the USA players ranked in the 100. Only participation in such tournaments, where the Americans promote their countrymen and give them ranking points we know some of their names. Besides Isner, who of the American males have lately achieved anything abroad? No one comes to my mind.
Sam Querrey is absolutely hopeless, Harrison (I used to count on him) is getting worse and worse, the rest are not worth mentioning at all.
The conclusion is simple. Americans should dramatically overview the existing approach to juniors training and change the old-fashioned tennis philosophy. Otherwise, very soon American surnames will be a miracle in the top 100...

LOL the technique that is tghuat today is nothing like the technique of the wooden racquet era ! For instance the 1 handed back hand was a slice or flat stroke with no low to high swing so you can use the weight to its advantage. Todays technique 1 handed back hand is nothing like that So it is wrong to thick a heavy racquet of any material is good for kids to learn technique. Because todays technique requires more strength.

Mighty useful. Make no mistake, I apaiecrpte it.

These guys ATP picks have been right on and I’ve just been winning since following him. They do not offer free safe picks but this would never sway my decision to follow a particular service. As I'm sure than any job should be paid for. The most important thing is that I know my money is being invested wisely.
